Yes, it's that time of the year again: IKEA catalogue time. And although the 2014 catalogue may not have dropped into your mail box yet, be prepared. The 2014 catalogue will bring an even bigger smile to you face than usual.
We’ve all spent more than our share of time flipping through the new IKEA catalogue and wondering how a piece of furniture will look and fit in our homes. Wonder no more – thanks to IKEA’s 2014 catalogue app. This year, IKEA has taken the catalogue's Augmented Reality one step further, by enabling customers to visualise how IKEA products will look in their homes.
Now you can scan items right out of the physical catalogue and see them pop up in your own kitchen, bedroom, living or dining room in real-time right before your eyes. Watch as sofas, chairs, beds, bookcases and more are transplanted from the page and automatically scaled to size in the context of your space on your smartphone or tablet screen.
On the topic of the new app, IKEA says that its European customers in particular have small spaces and need to know prior to purchasing how much space a piece of furniture will take up and where to place it – and that in general shoppers rarely know their home dimensions by heart.
Watch IKEA's video about the app
From IKEA: “The 2014 IKEA catalogue gives you the ability to place virtual furniture in your own home with the help of augmented reality. Unlock the feature by scanning selected pages in the 2014 printed IKEA catalogue with the IKEA catalogue application (available for iOS and Android) or by browsing the pages in the digital 2014 IKEA catalogue on your smartphone or tablet. Then simply place the printed IKEA catalogue where you want to put the furniture in your room, choose a product from a selection of the IKEA range and see how it will look in your home!”
How the app works: “Customers can put the physical IKEA Catalogue into their room in the space where they want to test a product. The IKEA Catalogue App picks up the catalogue and uses it to gauge the correct scale for products that will be shown on-screen. The product then appears on the customer’s mobile phone camera within the IKEA Catalogue App so it can be tested for colour and size. Customers can then test different products to find the right one for their home – finding the perfect fit.”
Props to the folks from IKEA – now all you have to do is imagine that IKEA sofa with a sofa cover from Bemz!
