The countdown is finally over: you can now officially buy a new cover for your Ikea sofa or chair in any of the beautifully breathtaking fabrics from the new Bemz Marimekko collection.
Why "Together at last" you ask? This is how Lesley, founder of Bemz, put it: "when looking for a design brand that would meet our stringent criteria -iconic Scandinavian design, machine washable textiles, 100% natural fibers- there was one name that kept coming up time after time. That name was Marimekko. We loved Marimekko's designs, design ethics, and corporate history. We also felt that the Marimekko design textiles fit perfectly not only with our existing Bemz products, but also with the design and form of the Ikea sofas and chairs. Additionally many of the textiles have been designed for use on furniture so the proportion and design form of the Marimekko designs fit perfectly into our slipcover product range."
A total of 11 fabrics are available through Bemz:
Unikko, the pattern perhaps most synonymous with the Finnish design house and certainly one of Marimekko's most renown, is an eye-catchingly beautiful depiction of poppies on a massive scale. Unikko was designed by Maija Isola and first introduced in 1964 but is still as popular today, a testament to the timelessness of the design. Unikko is available from Bemz in the two colorways shown above: Unikko - Red and Unikko - Black.
Another classic and easily recognizable Maija Isola pattern from Marimekko is the Pienet Kivet - Black/White (1959), pictured left. Maija Isola patterns often tended toward either floral or geometric designs, and always eye-catchingly conspicuous. These bold, graphic black stones set on a white background are no exception and it has remained a pleasing design over the years due primarily to its simplicity. Plus they are spot on trend for the monochromatic lover in you.
The dramatic yet organic Joonas (1961) design, developed in an combined effort by Maija Isola and her daughter Kristina Isola, wraps flowing minimalism and simple elegance into a package that is at once contemporary and timeless. Joonas is available from Bemz in the two colorways shown above: Joonas - Black/White and Joonas - Black/Blue.
More subtle monochromatic tones can be just as inspiring. The romantic and ornamental floral pattern on the left, by Maija Isola, called Fandango - Light Grey (1962), adds sophistication and elegance. If you are more drawn to Maija Isola's geometric patterns but want to stick with subtle tones, the strong graphic quality softened by rich decorative details of Praliini - Light Grey (1962), pictured right, provides interest and vitality.
Anna Danielsson's stunning Spinning - Multi (2006),pictured left, will undoubtedly provide a focal point in any room by transforming a plain sofa into an impactful contemporary piece. The vibrant Fandango - Red (1962), designed by the illustrious mother daughter team of Maija and Kristina Isola, is grace and class wrapped up into one beautifully bright package.
Iiro A. Ahokas's fascinatingly natural Kirsikka (2007) is a relatively new addition to the Marimekko portfolio. Kirsikka, Finnish for cherry, depicts clusters of the fallen fruit against circular planes of color. The color combinations used in this dynamic and modern design give the bold pattern a gentler and more subdued quality. Kirsikka is available from Bemz in the two colorways depicted above: Kirsikka - Turquoise and Kirsikka - Grey/Black.
Marimekko is famous for its its bold, graphic and natural designs and has become one of the most important textile design brands in the world, so much so that its superbly original designs have become synonymous with Finnish style. This is the first time that Marimekko designs will be available as Bemz slipcovers for Ikea sofas and chairs.
Of course, these new textiles can be mixed and matched with the entire Bemz product range, and as always, all Bemz textiles, including those in the new Marimekko collection, are 100% machine-washable and made from 100% natural fibers — just like the rest of Bemz textiles.
