Textile designer Kristina Isola has followed in the footsteps of her mother Maija Isola. She made her first sketches for fabrics at the age of sixteen as an assistant to her mother. Between 1978 and 1987 the mother and daughter designed for Marimekko under the joint name of Maija Isola/Kristina Isola. At present, Kristina Isola designs her own fabric prints and is also responsible for the new colorways of Maija Isola’s designs and the adaptation of the patterns to suit different products.
Kristina Isola’s designs are delicate – she prefers to make small, quiet images. She gets her inspiration from her surroundings and by listening carefully to what people say. Isola explains: "I go around with a net and gather fragments that emerge as ideas. There is always some kind of inspiring idea in the air; you just have to hold on to it. It can be the branch of a tree taking the light in a beautiful way, or a certain combination of colors. A scene can be so totally wonderful or beautiful that one wants to pass it on."
Together at last... The Bemz Marimekko collection will be available from May 27 at www.bemz.com.
